Schug Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, California
Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California’s most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug’s reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s. Schug Carneros Estate Winery is situated on a 50-acre site in the Carneros Appellation. The Carneros District lies at the south end of both the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. An area of low hills and flatlands, the region is profoundly affected by cool marine air from the bay and Pacific Ocean.
Winemaker Notes
This Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is produced without new oak to allow the bright varietal character to shine through. The fruit was harvested from selected vineyards located in the Sonoma Coast AVA, including the cooler microclimates of western Carneros. It has an elegant citrus aroma with hints of grapefruit and white peach. The palate opens with delicate flavors of lemon, apple, and stone fruits and finishes with mouthwatering acidity. J.L Chave “Offerus” St Joseph 2020 – 100% Syrah – ORGANIC
Going back to 1481, when the first Jean-Louis Chave was gifted a vineyard in St Joseph by the nobleman Farconnet, 25 generations have farmed some of the best parcels in the Northern Rhône. Though now known as perhaps the best producer of Hermitage (and certainly among the best blenders in the world), the family only expanded to this famous hill during the mid-1800s wave of phylloxera that decimated Europe’s vineyards.
Education – Saint-Joseph, in France’s northern Rhône Valley, is comfortably the region’s largest appellation in terms of geographical coverage. The appellation title covers both red wine made mainly from Syrah, and white wine made from Marsanne and Roussanne blended in varying proportions.
Offerus has always been the best value in St. Joseph, and in recent vintages it has gotten even better. Historically, Chave relied on friends with small production to supply him with grapes; now almost all the grapes come from his own Domaine, and his holdings are fabulous, coming from the east-facing slopes of the original historic St. Jospeh villages. It’s no surprise that this wine is consistently the highest-rated Northern Rhone.
Taste – ‘Offerus’ shows smoky notes of ripe dark fruit and violets, with spice, meat, and earth undertones. Pair with all things grilled! Cooper’s Price $39.99 – Save 10% Mix & Match 3 Bottles
Scar of the Sea Lopez Vineyard, Cucamonga Valley Zinfandel 2022 – Planted in 1918 ORGANIC
This comes from a 100+ year old vineyard site in The Cucamonga Valley.
Planted in 1918, 70 miles inland from Los Angeles and certified organic by CCOF, this vineyard is part of California history. Farmed today by the Galleano family, we are lucky to be able to make wine from this old vineyard. The vines are farmed without irrigation in granite rocks and sandy soil surrounded by freeways and track homes. This vineyard is one of the last reminders of an old California.
This wine was picked on August 6th, fermented with native yeast and with 50% whole cluster. The grapes were basket pressed at dryness and then aged for 8 months in old French oak barrels before being bottled with minimal SO2 and without filtration. VERY LIMITED – 240 cases were produced.
Taste – The nose is fuller and more present with deep black cherry, some oak spice and a bit of smudged sage. The palate has a depth and presence to it with good acid and a core of black fruits and savory herbs. D&M Tasting Notes
