Raise a Toast to our Founding Fathers for Presidents’ Day with this:
Varner Foxglove Central Coast Chardonnay 2014
At the core of Foxglove is Bob Varner, also the winemaker at Varner Wines. Beginning with their first vintage in 1991, Bob sources the wine from a variety of places, all of which are in Edna Valley. The resulting wine has Central Coast appellation pricing, and is full of complex fruit flavors that the Edna Valley appellation is known for.
Kevin’s Notes: When we first opened our store 4 ½ yrs ago, we featured this wine for its purity of Chardonnay fruit. Last November, I attended a trade show with a mission to find an outstanding Chardonnay and Cabernet. Foxglove Chardonnay and Cabernet clearly met my standards and I believe and we are featuring them today.

Drew Mid-Elevation Mendocino Ridge Pinot Noir 2016
With such a strong background in the vineyard it is no surprise why Jason Drew sees the vineyard site as the foremost ingredient in making exceptional wines. Considerable time is spent researching each vineyard chosen for the Drew portfolio. He establishes relationships with growers who share in his enthusiasm for meticulous and sustainable farming practices.
Jason feels he is merely the steward of the fruit in his winemaking. Grapes are picked when they have reached the desired flavors, while also maintaining essential acidity.
Kevins’ Notes: This is stunning Pinot Noir blended from 8 different single-vineyards. The fruit is rich without being over-the-top with expressive aromatics and flavors of cherry and dark raspberry. The blend of flavors and acidity is some of the best I have tasted giving you wonderful texture and mouthfeel. Jason Drew is a true winemaker by NOT over managing the wine. He allows most of the winemaking to be done in the vineyards, something that many winemakers fail to practice.

The Foxglove Cabernet over delivers for the price point. Dark, lush red and black fruits intermingle with earth and spice. Juicy forward texture is balanced by ripe tannins and great acidity.
Kevin’s Notes: The Varner’s are recognized worldwide for their Pinot Noir’s and Chardonnay’s and here they are making amazing Cabernet under their “second” label Foxglove. Why would you buy a Cabernet from a huge wine producer when you can get the personal love from the Varner’s? Unlike the large wine conglomerates, there are no additives or coloring added to make something that is not there.
