Montebuena Cuvee KPF Rioja – The big 90 point rating from Vinous is the kind of praise you expect to find for a $15-$20 Rioja, which makes this a stunner! But that’s the kind of value that Wine Enthusiast Importer and Master Sommelier Fran Kysela delivers on a daily basis. Here, Fran works with Rioja’s Unión de Cosecheros of Labastida to select his own favorite batches – Cuvee KPF – just for the US market. Unlike some, Fran isn’t trying to create a super-charged, over-ripe, parody of Spanish wine built just to pick up critical points. Instead, he’s delivered us a very fine, classically-styled, Rioja of nice restraint with plenty of short-term cellar potential. Produced from 100% hand harvested Tempranillo grapes, Cuvee KPF is a vivid ruby red with bright, sharply focused aromas of fresh red fruits and flowers, along with a spicy overtone and a hint of vanilla. Lithe and appealingly fruity on the palate, offering vibrant, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry flavors and a subtle rose pastille nuance. Finishes supple and long, displaying silky, slow-building tannins and resonating spiciness. Pairs well with beef & lamb dishes, stews & cheeses.

Esparao Monte Velho Red Blend – Produced according to the region’s rich wine-growing tradition, the variety of grapes and vinification techniques, demonstrate the character of the region from whence it comes: rich aromas, a smooth palate and an excellent gastronomic bent. It is the result of partnerships lasting over 15 years with suppliers from the different sub-regions, who use the same integrated production system as Esporão. Made with grapes from throughout the Alentejo region, grown in granite/schist rock with clay and loam soil, it is ever faithful to its roots. Monte Velho is the “Alentejo in a glass,” coming to represent a benchmark of the region in Portugal and the world over the years.
