Wine Tasting – June 24th and 25th

Join us this Friday and Saturday for our weekly tasting!

La LiANA Pinot Grigio

La LiANA is made in the northeastern part of Italy and grown in vineyards with direct exposure to the cool alpine breezes of the Carnic Alps and the moderating airflow from the Adriatic coast. These ideal conditions produce fresh, crisp, and deliciously complex wines.

La LiANA Pinot Grigio is produced in Friuli from an estate just down the road from our friends at Anselmi. It’s a great value-oriented, entry-level Pinot Grigio. While the vines are young, the grapes are soft-pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats.

Masciarelli Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo

Abruzzo is a region on the east (Adriatic) coast of central Italy, situated halfway up the ‘boot’. Winemaking traditions in Abruzzo date back to the sixth century B.C. thanks to the Etruscans, who played a major role in introducing viniculture to the area. It is also believed that when Hannibal made his epic journey over the Alps, his soldiers were given Abruzzo wine from Teramo.

The geographical makeup of Abruzzo is quite remarkable. A rugged, mountainous region with a lengthy coastline, its lush, green landscape is scattered with national parks and forests. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is one of Italy’s most famous wines, and can be found on wine store shelves all around the world. This classic, well-rounded, plum-scented Italian red is made from Montepulciano grapes grown in the Abruzzo region, on Italy’s Adriatic coast. It is quite distinct from Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is a Sangiovese-based wine from Tuscany.

Loca Linda Valle Uco Malbec, Argentina One Liter Bottle

Loosely translated, Loca Linda means “crazy in a good way.” The same could be said for the winemaking philosophy of owner Brian Smith – despite the naysayers, he found a way to produce a high-quality, expressive, hand-crafted wine at an approachable price point.

Today, CRZY BFTL Wines are sommelier driven wines made in close collaboration with friends, farmers and winemakers. The focus is on non-interventional winemaking to preserve the natural health of select vineyards. As part of their sustainable winemaking philosophy, Brian uses lightweight, eco-friendly one liter bottles which contain more wine, but involve less waste.

High density planting of 6,850 vines per hectare produces fewer pounds of fruit per vine. With fewer clusters to ripen, you get more of the good stuff going to each grape. Thirty percent of the wine sees a short time in new French Oak barrels.

G.D. Vajra Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of Piedmont in northwestern Italy. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.

Kevin’s Notes: Every March I am invited to an amazing tasting of wines in Denver from Piedmont, Italy; the home of Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo grapes. Nebbiolo is the grape for making the amazing wines known as Barbaresco and Barolo, the Queen and King of Italian reds. The younger vines of Nebbiolo are commonly used to make its namesake.

After tasting over 150 wines in four hours I selected the Barolo’s and Barbaresco’s you currently see in the store. I only selected one Nebbiolo, the G.D. Vajra. The wine so successful in the past, we bought 10 cases at this special direct imported price. I trust you will find this wine to be as incredible as I, cheers!
