Vajra Dolcetto d’Alba – $18.99
This last March, I and two of my staff traveled to Denver to taste over 200 wines from Piedmont, Italy. Why? Because in order to find the some of the best wines in world, you have to go to where the wine is. Samplings of these wines were not going to make their way to Glenwood. From these samplings, this is one of five stunning wines we selected to buy for our store to share with our customers. This is one of the best Dolcetto’s I have ever tasted. I love Dolcetto during the holiday meals for its vibrancy and freshness of violets and brilliant red fruit.
This is a home run for Thanksgiving because of its versatility to most things on that dish; from the white and dark meat, to the sweet potatoes and gravy!
Walter Scott La Combe Verte Willamette, Oregon Pinot Noir 2015 – $24.99
Last Spring, Sharon and I went to Oregon for some R&R with hope of seeing some wineries. We fell in love with Walter Scott wines! The Dumb Ox is special for its amazing quality and this is the only case shipped to Colorado!
Walter Scott Wines was started in 2008 by partners Ken Pahlow and Erica
Landon after years of living, studying and working within Burgundy, France and the Oregon wine industry. Ken had dreams of starting his own label, but had not truly achieved his goal until Erica helped him take the leap… In the spring of that year the two partners emptied their meager retirement accounts and used the funds to design the label and launch their dream.
Kevin’s Notes: Quite simply, this is the best Pinot Noir I have tasted in 3 years at this price. This is our “go to” Pinot Noir at this price for the holidays.
Alain Chabanon Les Boissieres 2010 – $24.99
On his land, Alain Chabanon produces wines are among the most famous of all Languedoc, France. Here the vine enjoys special care, in addition to the many microclimates which it is subject. All the vineyards at Alain Chabanon Domaine are conducted according to the principles of Biodynamics – Demeter certification since 2010 – Full plowing the soil, no herbicides or pesticides used, no chemical input both in the vineyard and the cellar. Their vineyards have been Organic since 1992.
The harvest is of course made entirely by hand, only between 7 am and noon, so as to preserve the grapes too hot weather. The wine is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The average of the vines are 28 years. The wine is aged 36 months in stainless steel tanks and they are unfined and unfiltered.
Taste: This vintage has a spicy nose that intermingle with the notes of ripe red fruits and licorice. In the mouth it is a wine with powerful but very well balanced aromatic. The tannins are fine and well wrapped. It recommended to decant the bottle at least 2 hours before pouring a glass, however; if you find yourself short time enjoy the wine over several hours.
Kurtz Family Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet 2013 – $24.99
Krutz Family Cellars was founded in summer of 2003 in Monterey County when Patrick Krutz produced sixty cases of wine. The idea was to purchase a ton of grapes a year in order to produce a small amount of wine for family and friends. However, demand soon changed that plan and Krutz Family Cellars continues to grow in an effort to supply that demand. In 2011 Bryan and Cole Krutz joined their brother Patrick as owners and Krutz Family Cellars is now a family owned winery located in Sonoma County.
Tasting notes: Rich, forward and balanced out of the gate. Dark and plush blackberry, black cherry and licorice lift forward from the glass. A very viscous and velvety texture on the palate accompany flavors of dark fruit, cedar spice and a bit of mountain sage. Youthful and lovely now but could easily negotiate cellar aging.
