Sazerac Rye

The One and Only New Orleans Original. Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye Whiskey that dates back to the 1800’s, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all.

TASTING NOTES:

Aromas of clove, vanilla, anise and pepper. Subtle notes of candies spices and citrus. The big finish is smooth with hints of licorice.

Orphan Barrel Rhetoric 21 Year

The Orphan Barrel project is a fascinating adventure in uncovering “forgotten” stocks of whiskey. This is not as uncommon as it might sound with whiskey quietly aging in warehouses for a decade or more long after the company that laid them down has moved on. Diageo founded the project to launch limited edition whiskeys from these stores. Rehtoric Bourbon 21yr is the fourth release from the project (the third was the Rhetoric 20yr) and is named for being a “conversation piece” in that each year the stocks will get a year older and the flavors change.

The bourbon was “found” at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery but was actually produced at the Bernheim Distillery. It is bottled by the George Dickel Distillery though we note Bernheim as the producer. The press release calls this a “progressive aging experiment” and compared to the 20yr they call it a “richer and more complex.”   Diageo is the parent company to Stitzel-Weller and George Dickle. They once owned the existing Bernheim distillery (from around 1992 to 1999, when they sold it to Heaven Hill) which is where this whiskey originates.
