Bodegas Zarate, Rías Baixas Albariño 2021 – Organic Wine

There were only thirty wineries in Galicia’s Rias Baixas when it officially attained appellation status in 1988, and almost all the wine they produced was consumed locally.

In the years since then, Rias Baixas has exploded, now home to six times as many producers, and driven by a worldwide thirst for the bracingly fresh and aromatic white wines made from the region’s signature grape, Albariño.

Most producers are content with making refreshing wines—for drinking young—to meet that demand. Yet, there are growers with much higher aspirations, and none more so than the one that pioneered high-quality Albariño in the mid-20th century: Bodegas Zarate.

Taste – Highly textural, mineral wine with a gravelly granitic mouth feel overlaid with apple florals and grapefruit zing. Aromatics and texturality are beautifully matched: pretty and direct jasmine, elderflower, granny smith, green citric zest, sherbety acidity, sandy minerals, a touch of creaminess and a delicate bitter herb crunch to finish.

Kevin’s Notes – The BEST Albarino I’ve tasted in years!!!  Cooper’s Price $22.99 Mix/Match 3 btls Price $20.69

Bohigas, Bohigas Cava Brut Rosat (rose) NV – Organic Wine

The Bohigas family can trace its roots at the same site in Catalonia to the 13th century. The latest chapter of the story really began in the 1930s when the great-uncle of the current owner began making cava at the estate. This state of the art, gravity fed winery sits at Òdena, in the Anoia river valley about 50 km northwest of Barcelona. The current owner, Jordi Casanovas Bohigas tend to 110 acres of vines planted with 10 varieties.

The Wine – Made from Trepat and Pinot Noir from the organically-managed estate vineyards. Macerated on the skins for several hours before fermentation takes place in stainless steel tank. Secondary fermentation in bottle, followed by 12 months aging on the lees. Dosage is 6g/L

Bodegas Olivares, Altos De La Hoya Old Vine Monastrell, Jumilla 2020 – Organic WIne

The grapevine and the olive tree – cultural icons rooted in a land bathed by sunshine – have represented the Olivares family from its birth.Pascual Olivares Fernández began producing small quantities of wine in 1930 to supply his region; the genesis of today’s Olivares family winery.

Our love for Jumilla’s harsh, beautiful landscape feeds our passion for wine and its production. That passion moves us to create natural, unique wines; wines that faithfully represent our region’s singular terroir.

Kevin’s Notes – As a buyer for an Atlanta wine wholesaler I would purchase 1200 cases, 3-4 times a year of this wine directly from Spain.  The wine was amazing then as it is now – tremendous wine at this price!   Cooper’s Price $13.99  Mix/Match 3btls $12.59

Descendientes de José Palacios, Pétalos Bierzo 2020 – Biodynamic WIne

During the late 1980’s, Alvaro Palacios travelled his native Spain selling French barriques to winemakers. But his journeys had a second purpose: to find the best place to achieve his goal of making Spain’s greatest wine. He ultimately decided, in 1990, on Priorato, where he would achieve worldwide fame with “L’Ermita” and “Finca Dofi.”

But there had been a close contender: Bierzo. It had all the ingredients that Alvaro wanted – incredibly steep hillside vineyards, distinctive terroirs and, most importantly, ancient vineyards of Mencia – a unique red grape believed brought by French pilgrims during the Middle Ages.

Kevin’s Notes – This is rich, yet delicate wine as it balances deep purple fruit with floral components of violets and geraniums.  It is an OMG wine! 9+ Points out 10!   Cooper’s Price $26.99   Mix/Match 3btls $24.29
